SBIR/STTR Program
The SBIR/STTR process is a competitive awards-based program that enables small businesses to explore their technological potential and provides the incentive to profit from its commercialization. The program is an important source of early-stage technology funding for small businesses, focusing on innovation and commercialization.
The SBIR/STTR process is a three-phased program that includes:
- Phase I: Proof of Concept (6-12 months, $50,000 – $275,000)
- Phase II: Technology Development (24 months, $750,000 – $1.8 million)
- Phase III: Commercialization (take your product to the commercial market or sell in the multi-billion dollar federal contracting marketplace)
The benefits of the SBIR/STTR program include:
- Equity-free funding through federal agencies to American small businesses
- Non-dilutive funding to develop your technology and chart a path toward commercialization
- Retain the rights to the intellectual property
- Opportunity to obtain additional funding to continue the development of the technology
- Funding with no strings attached – you do not give up equity in your company, you do not give up rights to the intellectual property, you do not return the funding
- Increased private sector commercialization of innovations derived from Federal R&D, thereby increasing competition, productivity, and economic growth
To participate in the SBIR/STTR program, small businesses must be:
